China may be a fast-rising economic power on the international stage but the world’s most populous country has yet to play much of a role in Formula 1, despite the Chinese Grand Prix being run since 2004. However, two-time world champion Fernando Alonso could play a key role in changing that in the years ahead.
Ahead of this year’s Chinese GP this weekend, Alonso announced that his Fernando Alonso Karting School, which previously has operated primarily in his native Spain, will be expanding into China in a big way. The school will build 40 karting tracks in China over the next five years.
