At the Annual General Assembly on December 6, 2019, the FIA (Federation Internationale de l’Automobile) ended its relationship with ASN Canada (Autorité Sportive Nationale) cutting off the Ontario-based organization’s national sporting authority.
It is rumored that leadership of the ASN will leave their current positions on December 31, 2019. Other rumors suggest a ‘transitional period’ until March 31, 2020, with the new national sporting authority entering into power to deal with licenses and other approvals effective April 1, 2020.
What does this mean to kart racers like Demaras Racing? To get a better perspective, a bit of background:
The International Automobile Federation (FIA) is an association established in 1904 to represent the interests of motoring organisations and motor car users. To the general public, the FIA is mostly known as the governing body for auto racing events, but the FIA also promotes road safety around the world. The FIA recognizes two motoring delegates within each country; one for touring (in Canada, the CAA) and one for sporting.
In 1951 CASC was founded (Canadian Automobile Sports Clubs) to promote Canadian motorsports beyond Saturday night stock cars and dirt track racing. The goal was to organize competitions in Ontario and eventually, Canada, and in 1967 CASC was recognized by the FIA as the governing body of motor sport in Canada and became a full international member.
In 1990 there was a reorganization of motoring activities in Canada. The CAA remained the FIA delegate for touring, but a new sporting delegate was selected. CASC was run primarily by a group of volunteers, and the FIA’s argument was that a dedicated organization was needed to run the professional side of Canadian motorsport. The organization was ASN Canada FIA.
So what does this mean for motorsports in Canada? You can rest assured that there will still be kart racing in Canada in 2020, and all the big racing events will go on an planned. There’s too much money at stake to mess with that. There will be a new head of motorsports in Canada, who will promise a bright future. Time will tell how well those promises are kept.
