Art imitates life and life imitates art.
On historic Route 66 in San Bernardino, California, is the Wigwam Motel. Built in the 1940’s, only two other Wigwam motels are still around today, as locations in Kentucky, Alabama, Louisiana, and Florida are long gone. Another Wigwam in Arizona is also on Route 66, and these old-timey curiosities are forever linked to the Mother Road.

The Cozy Cone Motel in Pixar’s epic 2006 film Cars is not just inspired by the Wigwam; it is the Wigwam. The location of the conical rooms on the Mother Road, the slightly run down appearance of the place (despite being newly refurbished) and even the mid-century architecture of the main office building are the same.

The Wigwam has embraced their newfound fame thanks to Lightning McQueen’s trilogy, by installing Radiator Springs signs and parking rusted out pickup trucks (resembling Tow Mater from the films) in the parking lot next to the rooms.
