Even at age 5, I wanted to be a getaway driver. The career goal seemed exciting, and a great way to earn lots of cash. In the movies, the getaway driver was always heroic. A wheelman didn’t carry a gun or actually do the robbing of the bank with the bad guys. He just provided a route to freedom. That kind of makes the getaway driver a good guy.

What’s not appealing about being a getaway driver? The older I got the more I realized how good they have it. Wheelmen get to drive fast cars, and weave through traffic the way regular commuters only wish they could. Getaway drivers pick and choose the jobs they agree to, and skip ones if the pay is too low, or the risk is too high. In the movies the getaway driver always had a ‘moral code’ of what they will and won’t do. Like the samurai of the streets.
Five year old me was intrigued by this career choice.
