Every October, the local Toronto car clubs announce their ‘season closer‘ events, even though it’ll be 6-8 weeks before the snow really hits. Sad but true that many cool cars are already getting put away for winter. Saturday night was the last car meet at Kennedy Commons, this time being organized by SecretMeets and the Obnoxious Car Club (great name).

Scarborough may be the Brooklyn of Toronto, but it has the best gas station east of Yonge Street. The Petro-Canada at Pharmacy Ave & Eglinton Ave East has a car wash, Tim Horton’s coffee shop and A&W drive-thru window and it’s been there for 50+ years; an institution! With the ’92 SVX fueled and washed, it was time for a night drive to the car show.

Trouble was brewing as soon as we arrived. Multiple police cruisers had their lights on, and had stopped a couple drivers in their cars for doing god knows what. But the worse part was that everyone was being chased out of the parking lot.

We all know the rules; no burnouts, no 2-step and no booming bass. Other than that if you respect the police, they’ll show the same respect. But only two hours after it started, gearheads were driving away, hopping on the 401 for a high-speed blast to the next show.

Couldn’t say for sure why the cops shut down the car meet, but it didn’t solve anything. A couple of kids revving their engines doesn’t justify shutting down the event and spoiling a Scarborough Saturday night. What the authorities don’t seem to understand is that kicking everyone out of Kennedy Commons because of one person’s behaviour is actually what creates street takeovers. I mean….it’s not like everyone is just going to go home at 9:30 pm on a Saturday night!

About a block south of Kennedy Commons there’s a Tim Horton’s with a big parking lot. That’s a biker joint, but not the way you think! It’s all 45 to 55 year old guys riding Kawasaki and Ducati sport bikes. Just the right demographic to appreciate a ’92 Subaru SVX.

Cool bunch of guys…and the police absolutely leave them alone. Maybe because it’s not the Fast & Furious crowd making a commotion in the parking lot. But really, it’s because the bikers are way too fast to catch.
