The 2025 CASC Road Racing season kicked off with the 73rd annual British Empire Motor Club (BEMC) Spring Trophy Race. One of a handful of regional races this season, it also served as the first of four rounds in the 2025 Miata Canada Cup. The race weekend included prototypes, GT cars, Formula Libre (open wheel) and Vintage Historic cars racing in their own divisions.

At the 7:45 AM driver’s meeting, rumours began swirling of a fifth race being added to the Miata’s schedule in mid-July. As major racing series make their annual stops at Canadian venues, support series are needed to keep spectators entertained for the full day. If the series adds in even a non-points race, it would be on a famous Canadian circuit, dream come true for all competitors.

Friday’s mixed practice sessions were broken up into open-wheel and closed-wheel cars, which had the Miata Canada Cup cars on tack with much faster competitors including privately owned NASCAR and Trans-Am Series cars. Therefore qualifying was the first time all 26 Mazda’s would take to the track together without interference from the V8 monsters. Demaras set a respectable 1:44.004 lap time which had him starting from the outside of the 5th row, in P10.

Demaras’ first race in the No. 12 MagiSeal Miata was challenging. Starting on the outside going into Turn 1, Daniel tried to ‘hang it’ around the outside, but once his line intersected with the racing line, he had to concede the position. The racing was extremely close, as nearly identical racing machines jostled for position. Nobody has a speed advantage over anyone else; it all comes down to driver’s skill and the randomness of who the racing gods smile upon that day. Daniel crossed the finish line in P12 with a big smile on his face.

It wasn’t as high up the finishing order as Daniel hoped, but having mom Alice and pops Chris at the track to cheer him on made up for it. CASC Regional Racing events competitive and challenging, but they’re also a wonderful opportunity to spend a weekend with family and friends.

The first races of the season was in the books, and valuable points were scored. But on Sunday morning it would be back to the track for Races 3 & 4 of the 2025 Miata Canada Cup.

    1. Agreed. The Miatas are so evenly matched, there’s competition all the up and down the grid. And that’s what’s fun? Even someone at the back of the pack has someone to race with.

      Super fun experience.
