Been searching online for a license plate flipper for the past week or so. Pretty certain these are illegal, as they’re used to avoid detection by photo radar, automated speed cameras, or tolls on Hwy 407. But I just want to show off my customized vaporwave-inspired plates from The Plate Guys.

I’d been looking forward to the two big August car shows all summer; the Subie Showdown and Oblivion VII. I even got some synthwave decals installed by Will at C17 Media to make my car stand out. While at a show on Saturday, I was taking pictures of cars from odd angles to avoid their license plates. When I saw a custom JDM plate on a right-hand drive Subaru imported from Japan, inspiration hit.

At pretty much every car show and parking lot meet throughout summer you’ll find The Plate Guys trailer, making customized, embossed metal plates for show cars. They make everything from retro California plates for classic hot rods to Japanese plates for that authentic JDM look. For my SVX, it was a complete custom job with a grid background, SVX logo, and Outrun sunset stripes.
Rather than unscrewing the Ontario plates and temporarily installing the VAPR plates, I thought it would be cool to install a license plate flipper. What could be cooler than showing up at an unsanctioned car rally, the underglow creating an eerie appearance, airing out the ride and slamming it on the ground, then flipping the plates around.

The plate is really cool but I agree that the law wouldn’t think so. Great looking car.
Thanks, Dawg. The car has been a work in progress for 10+ years, but it’s never looked this ‘different’ before.

And as far as the police, I think if I installed a plate blocker (add electricity and the clear pate cover becomes opaque) then they would have every right to be upset with me. But a plate flipper, with what is obviously a decorative plate I doubt will get any negative attention from the constables.

We’ll see…
Good luck !!!
Maybe next year I’ll sell it and buy a beige Toyota. Just to be normal and blend just to the background. No police attention, etc.
Normal? where’s the fun in that lol.
I always thought it would be good to have one.
Just look up 510 Auto Group. They have flippers, stealth covers, you name it. Grab an old plate from your garage and flip it before you park at a meter. No more parking tickets!
