Saturday, March 24th was the big day; the grand opening of the new K1 Speed indoor karting track, the first in Canada. Track owners Jacob and Daniel arranged to have IndyCar champ Paul Tracy at the track.
Over 200 racers qualified for the opportunity to race against the hometown hero, with the top 16 getting their shot.
While the K1 regulars were in attendance, many of the kart racers from Goodwood and Mosport also showed up to take their shot, including Demaras’ regular competitors Avery, Owen, Khloe and ‘Fast’ Myles.
As usual, K1 Kevin kept everything on track, acting as race starter and master of ceremonies.
The racers were no match for Paul Tracy. Watching Canada’s greatest IndyCar driver start from last and pass driver after driver (despite being 150 lbs heavier than the teens he was racing against) was something special. It really showed what a professional driver is capable of.
And even though Tracy was racing against youngsters, he wasn’t too shy to use the ‘chrome horn’ to move another racer out of the way (or into the wall. Paul Tracy is one tough guy!
The event was a great success and helped to raise money for the Make A Wish foundation ($5 from every race donated to charity). Despite the good deeds, Paul helped solidify his image as the villain by jumping the start and blasting past his competition before the first turn.
