On Saturday September 10th 2022, Will Power set a new IndyCar record of 68 pole-positions. It has taken Power nearly 15 years since his rookie season in 2008 to set the new benchmark, making him the best qualifier ever. An amazing accomplishment!

The record Power broke stood for nearly 30 years. Mario Andretti’s IndyCar career spanned from 1964 to 1994 (although he took time off from IndyCar to go and win the Formula 1 World Championship) and he accumulated 67 pole-positions, which stood as the high-water mark in American open-wheel racing. As a special bonus, Mario Andretti was at the Laguna Seca track this weekend to watch Power’s pole run, and congratulate him afterwards.
