For the second week, Fast Film Fridays explores the history of car cinema from the stone age. From January 1965, it’s The Flintstones episode called “Fred’s Second Car”.

Fred Flintstone goes to a police auction to guy a second car for his family. He outbids a shady character for a vehicle that formerly belonged to a gangster. Later Fred learns that the shady character was the agent for a mob boss who believes that there are diamonds hidden in the car, and who isn’t about to let Flintstone keep him from them.

This was episode 17 of ‘The Flintstones’ fifth season, and reflected American culture at the time, where no suburban family could be satisfied with just one car.

  1. Wow, “Fred’s Second Car” from The Flintstones sounds like a classic! It’s fascinating to see how even in the stone age, they had their own version of a car auction and all the drama that came with it. Fred’s determination to get a second car for his family, even if it means outbidding a shady character, shows his dedication to his loved ones. The twist with the mob boss and hidden diamonds adds an exciting layer of suspense to the story. It’s amazing how car-related adventures have been a part of entertainment for so long. Can’t wait to watch this episode and see how it all unfolds! 🚗💎

    1. Ah yes… the stone age: the good old days when fossil fuels were a thing of the future.

This episode is an interesting reflection of mid-60’s American culture. A proper middle class family couldn’t just have ONE car!

I bet if this episode were made today, Fred would trade in the Flinstone-mobile for Metro Pass and he’d be at the auction buying Wilma a bicycle.
