Here’s an old newsreel (courtesy of British Pathe) documenting the fallout from the 1957 Mille Miglia. The Michael Mann movie ‘Ferrari‘ is based on these events, and the reality of the day was just as gruesome as the film depicts.

The Marquis de Portago is shown speeding by in his Ferrari down long straight road; this was the last images of De Portago before he was killed. Piero Taruffi is shown winning the race in the No. 535 with teammate Wolfgang von Trips in the No. 532 close behind. as spectators in the stands applaud, unaware of the tragedy where 12 people were killed.
Even at the time authorities believed this would be the last Mille Miglia race ever.
