Finally getting the attention it deserves, the Subaru SVX has topped a list on motoring website Jalopnik. No, it wasn’t a list of most underrated retro Japanese sports cars. It was ‘The Weirdest Windows Ever Built’ and as the proud owners of a 1992 SVX, we’re glad to see the car is still remembered.

Subaru SVX ‘Window Within a Window’

The worst car ever to take through the drive-through, the SVX had an upper window portion bonded to the door frame, and a smaller retractable window (like the Lamborghini Countach). The window could be opened at speed with no wind buffeting, and the aerodynamics prevented rain from entering the car.

VW Bus Windshield

The Volkswagen bus had split windows up front. The safari windows were an option that allowed owners to open the windshield and enjoy the breeze.

Ford T-Bird Opera Window

The Ford Thunderbird was not the first or the last car to have opera windows, but it is arguably the most iconic. These portholes were added to Thunderbird hardtops to increase visibility.

1963 Split-Window Corvette

The first-year of the C2 Corvette had a character line down the roof and a split rear window. Buyers complained viciously about of poor visibility, and the feature was dropped by ’64. Today, they are the most sought after models if Sting Ray.

5 Window Chevy/GMC Pickups

These extra windows were added to improve visibility, but their curved glass surface proved to be extremely reflective and many drivers complained that headlights would reflect in them and distract the driver.

VW Skylight Windows

The VW Bus makes another appearance for its defining skylight windows. There are other cars like the Land Rover Defender that featured these windows, but this VW is iconic for having an absurd amount of glass, including these numerous skylights.

Asymmetrical Nissan Cube Windows

In a sea of boring SUVs its tough to stand out. But Nissan’s Cube did! Some loved it, many hated it, but you couldn’t miss it. Note: this was just glass over the rear pillar, and didn’t actually improve visibility.

Oldsmobile ‘Vista-Cruiser’ Roof

Both the Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser and the Buick Roadmaster had the Vista Roof, festooned with bulbous skylights and stationary glass panels over the rear seats to give passengers a panoramic view.

Agree with Jalopnik’s choices? Think they missed a great window design? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
