No Flames at the Friday Night Car Meet

With restrictive city by-laws effectively shutting down the La Paloma car meet on Friday nights in Vaughan, its anyone’s guess where the next big event will be. Just north of Vaughan is the town of Newmarket and there was a sanctioned car meet on Friday night; went to check it out.

With the Bugeye looking fresh from the body shop and car wash, and the OEM+ car garnered just a little attention parked next to vanilla-coloured Hondas.

There were several Subaru afficionados at the show including Owen and his girl Emily, who brought this right-hand-drive Hawkeye WRX to the show. It had an incredible carbon-fiber hoodd, lots of Cobb go-fast parts.

Most of the vehicles in the parking lot meet-up were Japanese. Cost effective and infinitely customizable cars like Infiniti G and Nissan Z cars.

Since the show was a little north of Toronto, and the car scene is a little different, there were some pickup trucks with serious lifts on display.

The area is a little more rural than you’d realize, and one fellow even brought his tractor to show off. He spent several minutes asking if anyone had a 20A fuse so he could get it running again.

There was also an incredible BMW in metallic purple with a front mounted intercooler poking through the front bumper. That was some real creativity on display.

At exactly 9:55 pm, all the kids just started up their engines and headed out; show was over at 10:00 pm, and the police were waiting to escort stragglers away. There were a few engine revs and a single burnout in limp-wristed protest, but soon the crowd was dispersed.

This is a long way from the chaos and all night revelry that used to happen at La Paloma, so maybe this wasn’t quite the replacement. We’ll look for a rowdier event in a couple weeks.
