Today is the 108th Indianapolis 500, with 33 of the fastest drivers in the world chasing after racing immortality. As the eleven rows of three cars take the green flag, the entire front row will be Team Penske, an exceptionally rare accomplishment.

The last time Team Penske had a front-row lockout at Indianapolis was 36 years ago when Unser Sr, Sullivan and Mears took the first three qualifying positions for ‘The Captain’. Fan-favourite Will Power actually predicted this achievement in the spring because he was so confident in the team. Too bad Power missed pole position by only 0.303 mph to his teammate Scott McLaughlin.
Tune in to NBC today for the ‘Greatest Spectacle in Racing‘ as the green flag waves at 12:45 pm.
Planning to watch for the first time in perhaps decades. I even subscribed to YouTube TV last night for this express purpose. (It was something we were already considering.) Who should I be cheering for as far as drivers and/or sponsors?
We had to stay away from TV, radio and social media for days to avoid hearing the results of the Indy 500 (as we were hosting a charity event at a car show this weekend). Too late to answer your comment now, but I would never bet against Team Penske.
i thought i missed the race altogether but realized the rain delay made it so i got to see the whole race. i wonder if any of the drivers left to go to the coke 600 but i wouldn’t think so since they would have missed the entire indy 500
Yeah, that was the plan for that NASCAR driver Kyle Larson. He was planning on “doing the double” and racing the Indy 500 and the Coke 600.
.
I’m glad he stuck around! That one-off race for him was planned 18 months ago, but there’s always another NASCAR race next weekend (every weekend).
happy for newgarden but o what a painful loss for o’ward
Poor Pato. He finished 2nd a couple years ago, then crashed out last year while also running second.
.
It was hard to see him cry like that.
