Although I’m no longer a rookie in Formula 1200, it’s important to keep growing as a driver. I spent the Friday test day ahead of the BARC race at Mosport training with Paul Subject. He spent the day observing my driving, both through video and by pacing behind me in his Formula Mazda.

While at first I felt I must have gotten much quicker to keep him behind me, he reminded me of the difference in machinery when he hit the gas after finishing his on-track observation and speeding off into the distance.

Paul is an experienced driver and a great teacher, who knows what’s going on behind the wheel and inside the head of a driver. We reviewed footage earlier in the week, and he had good insights for me on the test day. I followed his advice, widening entries into the high speed corners and working to rotate the car better through the hairpin at turn 5. The advice he gave me helped me gain a better understanding of what my car was doing, and how it could be doing it better. We made changes to the #12 car, and by the end of the day it was moving the way I wanted.

After a day of training, Paul had no notes for my final session. I had made the adjustments he wanted me to and was taking the right line. Over 4 sessions, I had made some solid improvements and was better prepared than ever for the race weekend ahead.
