Those Aussies are so lucky. Look what cool stuff they have on their side of the world. Crocodile Dundee, Margot Robbie, Hugh ‘Wolverine’ Jackman, the Mad Max films and now brand new Subaru WRX Police Cars to catch criminals in the Outback.

Northern Territory Police have added 13 brand-new Subaru WRX sedans to its high-performance fleet, to replacing an ageing mix of Kia Stingers, Volkswagen Passats, and previous-gen WRXs. According to the government officials, the new WRX patrol cars have been designed by actual police officers, and feature a dual battery system, automatic number plate recognition cameras, speed radars, a rear-facing message board, and a rifle mount with electronic release.

Each WRX is powered by Subaru’s FA24 turbocharged four-banger. The boxer engine sends 271 HP to all four wheels (it IS a Subaru after all) but through a CVT automatic transmission. It’ll go zero to highway speed in under 6 seconds and top out at 250 km/h.

The Northern Territory isn’t the first Australian region to deploy WRX police cars to its highways. Police departments across the country – including Victoria and New South Wales – have used WRXs for more than two decades, while New South Wales Police currently has a WRX on loan from Subaru corporate as a community engagement vehicle.
