Made a deal to sell the Mazda Miata, but drop off’s not until Monday. That leaves one last weekend to enjoy the droptop before it sails into the sunset. Thanks to social media,, found out about Durham_Meets season opener car meet in Ajax, 20 mins east of Toronto. So, on went the helmet and racing gloves for a high speed drive across Hwy 401. A roadster with a roll bar, racing stripes, and driver wearing a yellow helmet wouldn’t draw too much attention.
Arriving at the meet it was obvious something was wrong. There were some customized cars, but mostly it was a mall parking lot filled with vanilla-mobiles. One of Durham Region’s finest strolled over to the Miata and had a friendly chat about owning one back in the day. When asked why there were so many cops and so few car enthusiasts, he explained that the landlord called about an ‘unauthorized’ gathering on his property.
A check on Insta provided the re-location address; a quick ten minute drive back to Scarborough. Arrived just as the sun began to set, and the place was just packed. Didn’t even get the car parked before three young black guys rapidly approached with big smiles on their faces. It was R.J. and his pals whose truck I towed out of the mud, trackside at Cayuga last year. Such an appreciative guy!
Two vendors had set up tents selling synthwave styled ‘drifting’ merch, and row after row of cars covering the full spectrum of the car scene filled the parking lot. A vintage Rolls-Royce and a modern Bentley represented the blue-blood crowd. A young guy parked next to the Rolls, proudly showing off his riced-out Civic, while other gearheads gathered next to a Toyota with house speakers in the trunk.
The No. 16 MagiSeal Miata got some love from bystanders and enthusiasts. One of them even shouted out ‘I love your Viper, man!‘ while driving past. The Miata is loved by all, women, children and men who can put their macho egos away and drive one.
All smiles and filled with good vibes, it was time to end the night. The perfect end to the Miata’s story.
