There’s a bunch of car clubs in Toronto hosting pop-up meets across the city. Some are notorious for getting shut down because of all the burnouts, donuts and rev-bombing. But the smart guys at Scarborough Meets arranged their 1-year anniversary event at ‘Global Kingdom Ministries’ a church in the east end.

The meet started in the afternoon, which allowed for some rare daytime photography. The selection of cars at the meet was far more diverse than any of the tuner car meets before. On the high end there was a Rolls-Royce Spectre coupe looking like a million bucks. In the affordable car section were OG people movers like a VW Beetle and a Mini Cooper from the 1960s.

But there was a pair of Subarus that looked pretty good too!

For the first time in what seems like forever, two cars the Demaras Racing garage were at the same show. Daniel’s 2002 Subaru WRX with an STi engine, plus Chris’ 1992 Subaru SVX. Fresh from the car wash, the Japanese cars got a lot of attention, and local photographer Simson Wilson took the time to shoot the cars with his high-end camera (pictures below).

As the sun began to set, the golden hour arrived. Every picture was a stunner. The crowd got so big that late arrivals had to park next door.

A Toyota 4-Runner parked close by and opened its tailgate to reveal eight subwoofers, and started blasting music like it was a Stereo Sound-clash. It was just unbearable being parked next to the guy, so the SVX was left looking for a new parking spot

The meet was mostly Japanese tuner cars, with Toyota GT86s and Mazda Miatas being popular choices. There were some custom cars and classic JDM vehicles that elevated the scene too. No question the car scene is alive and well in Scarborough.

The funny part was the young guys and girls in their inexpensive cars were actually well behaved. The ones they call knuckleheads and hooligans knew that Jesus was watching them, and kept it cool. But the heavy-hitters in their six-figure supercars were the first to start trouble. Richie Rich shooting flames out his exhaust pipes and doing smoky burnouts as night arrived signaled the end of the meet for many.

  1. When I was 12, my friends and I would ride out early on Sunday morning to practice motocross and then ride to church for the 11:00 service. We were quite a spectacle walking into the sanctuary in our motorcycle gear, holding our helmets in our hands. Not quite as exciting as a car meet at the Global Kingdom Ministries Church, but a good memory.

    1. I can picture a couple young knuckleheads in motocross gear strolling into church, the leathers speaking against the wooden pews. Thanks for sharing that memory!

The folks at the church were super nice. I was sitting on bench near the church doors, enjoying a cold beverage, when three vampire-looking with kids came out the church. Still not sure if the church simply allowed the kids to their facilities, or if those three were church goers. Either way, such a great place.

      1. They have “global” in their name. Vampires welcome. There were six of us young knuckleheads going to church in motorcycle gear. We made an impression.
