Ozzy Osbourne, the godfather of heavy metal and lead singer of iconic 1970s band Black Sabbath, died on July 22 at 76 years old. The “Prince of Darkness” to his fans, Ozzy was as famous for his music as he was for his drug-induced lifestyle. Though a cause of death has not been released by the family, Osbourne had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease some time ago.

Only two weeks earlier, during the IndyCar race at the Mid-Ohio Sportscar Track the No. 60 Meyer Shank Racing Honda had a special livery that honored Ozzy Osbourne and his music. While the passing of Osbourne is a great loss to the rock and roll universe, it is very cool that he lived long enough to actually see his visage emblazoned on the side of an IndyCar.

The primary sponsor of the No. 60 raced by Felix Rosenqvist is SiriusXM satellite radio. To promote the variety of music channels, SiriusXM often wraps the race car in livery related to iconic bands. Satellite channel 38 features the music of Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne in an exclusive channel created by Ozzy himself in February 2012.

At today’s IndyCar race at Laguna Seca, the No. 60 will be tie-dyed, an iconic livery honouring the Grateful Dead on the band’s 60th anniversary.

The Grateful Dead on satellite channel 23 is one of SiriusXM’s longest-running artist-branded channels, and features music spanning the band’s career with unreleased concert recordings, and even rare archival interviews with Jerry Garcia.

    1. You know Rubinho I usually don’t like special liveries. I firmly believe the car should look the same all season long.

This is INCREDIBLY cool! Black and purple and Ozzy it just looks so evil. Respect to whichever marketing guy or girl came up with this one.

  1. It’s amazing Ozzy lived as long as he did, given his drinking and drugs. I fell in love with Black Sabbath after I heard their first album in 1971. I was 12 years old. Their music was so amazingly cool.
