The most motivating man in IndyCar is Will Power. To the Demaras Racing family, he’s always been ‘our guy’ and an inspirational person. In those early IndyCar seasons he suffered some crushing defeats, placing runner-up year after year before mastering the ovals. But he never gave up, and continued to improve as a driver through his 269 races, and counting, for Team Penske.
Getting to watch one more victory celebration for the No. 12 Verizon IndyCar this weekend was special. You never know; it could be Will’s last!
After an attrocious season for Team Penske, Power has put them back on top step of the podium with the 45th win of his career. But once the chanpagne was sprayed, and the crowds thinned out, FOX Sports colour commentator Will Buxton had a heart to heart interview with Power that made many question whether Power has already accepted his fate.
Buxton asks Power flat out “Is this a farewell victory? A final farewell to Verizon, to Penske, a chance to thank them for all that they’ve given you and, in turn, what you’ve given them?”
A pensive Power initially shrugs off the question with a no… then a maybe. He admits it might be the last win he has in the Verizon car, and expresses gratitude to Roger Penske and all that he’s done. Finally commenting “If that’s it, that’s good for me too.”
Team Penske really needs to sign this guy for one more season.
