Japanese manga series ‘Speed Racer‘ is probably the most popular racing-themed cartoons ever made. Years after being shot, people still talk about it or fall in love with the Mach 5. The Volkswagen Golf GTI is also a known name among hot hatchbacks. Volkswagen once managed to join Speed and the Golf GTI in a now legendary car commercial shot in 1996.
Sorry, I still don’t think VW Golfs are cool.
When I was in high school in the ’90s, the Golf GTI was a quick car that teenagers could afford. Not Mustang money (or power) but just a peppy four-banger and FWD to justify to parents that it was a logical, sensible car. Their looks grew on me too.
.
But later I found out that the dude that designed the original Golf Mk1 is the same guy who penned the DMC DeLorean (and even my Subaru SVX) Giorgetto Giugiaro.
.
Does that make the Golf cool? Maybe not.
My first car was a VW Bug. I don’t think Giugiaro was involved with that design…
Ha! Not quite… but dude designed everything from supercars to cameras to pasta.
