About a decade after the ‘Speed Racer – VW GTI’ commercial first aired, insurance giant Geico got in on the nostalgic action. In this episode, Trixie warns Speed Racer about a bridge out up ahead of his Mach 5, but he’s too focused on the race. Trixie then tells Speed how much money she saved on car insurance by switching to Geico.
Silly, funny, totally out of context. Nearly 40 years after the cartoon TV show’s first run, it still had staying power.
I had Geico insurance for for over 20 years. Then they tripled my rates for no reason. I had no tickets, no claims. They would not back down. I said, “Sayonara,” and went with a local insurer at a fraction of the cost of Geico. I’m not familiar with Speed Racer. Do you get Car & Driver Mag? Geico had to raise rates to pay for the licensing of that Speed Racer cartoon from the late ’60s. Probably just before your time.
We used to get Car and Driver up here in Toronto. I’m sure they still sell it at the airport or the book store. But none of the convenience stores even carry magazines any longer.
