A group claiming to be University of British Columbia engineering students has taken credit for suspending a VW Beetle on a cliff near Squamish, B.C.
A red, hollowed-out Bug, with an inverted Canadian flag on the trunk, and its roof marked with a large “E” was suspended by two cables. This has all the hallmarks of a ongoing pranks by engineering students at the UBC. There’s a long history of students pranks, including suspending Beetles, including one time from the Golden Gate Bridge.

UBC’s Engineering Undergraduate Society denies any involvement and the school denies any liability. But provincial officials were not amused by the stunt, saying it posed a public safety risk and RCMP confirmed they were investigating the case. The car was removed from the rock cliff on Wednesday afternoon, a spokesperson for the parks department said, adding that the Sea-to-Sky Highway would not be closed for the operation, as the car would lowered to the parking lot via helicopter.
This just goes to show what a great job the UBC undergrads did… they certainly didn’t have a helicopter!
