Commercials weren’t always the piles of visual garbage they are today. There were some really cool car commercials, back in the day.

In 2001, the British dance music group ‘Dirty Vegas’ released a track called ‘Days Go By’ which went largely unnoticed. As luck would have it, a Mitsubishi executive saw the video for the song, while in a hotel room in Holland. He loved it and wanted the music for an upcoming Mitsubishi Eclipse sports car ad campaign.

After securing the rights for the song, a commercial titled ‘Remix’ was released in 2002, which became quite the cultural phenomenon: Created by the Deutsch LA ad agency, the 30 second commercial featured a group of friends driving a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse at night, while one passenger does a pop-and-lock dance routine in the front seat, while the Dirty Vegas song plays.

The commercial was so successful that it took ‘Days Go By’ from obscurity to No. 14 on the Billboard charts, and even brought home a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording in 2003. A second version of the music video was filmed, which included shots of the band driving through L.A. in a silver 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse, before stopping outside Chroni’s Famous Sandwich Shop to watch an old break dancer. It was a savvy marketing move to tie in the music video with the TV commercial that brought Dirty Vegas so much acclaim.

  1. Forgot those commercials …… had a Mitsu Eclispe GT ……. everybody wanted to race me …. from hot rods to motorcycles to Vettes ….. but, I DID behave!

    1. Yeah, you just stick with that story. How you behaved. I’m sure the judge believed you then, and your insurance company still believes you.

Let’s here more about the Mitsubishi Eclipse GT you had! Through several generations, those cars just went from strength to strength. Despite being a Subaru guy, I always loved the Eclipse!
