One thousand lucky fans received an early look at DRIFTER during the 2026 Canadian International AutoShow. Over three days of appearances, Sung Kang met fans, posed for pictures, signed merchandise and spoke about the independently produced film he wrote, directed and stars in. The visit concluded at the John Bassett Theatre, where the audience watched an extended clip from the movie’s opening and took part in a special Q&A with Kang.
Now, the story is coming full circle as DRIFTER returns to Toronto for its World Premiere. The Toronto International Film Festival has officially selected the film for its 2026 Discovery programme, which showcases emerging filmmakers and bold directorial debuts. TIFF’s 51st edition runs from September 10 to 20.
The complete Festival schedule, including the date, time and theatre for the DRIFTER premiere, will be released on August 11. Single tickets will then go on sale to TIFF Members beginning August 21, depending on membership level. Subscribers to TIFF’s newsletter should watch their inboxes for access to the TIFF Insider Presale presented by Visa, beginning August 28.
Eligible Visa Infinite cardholders will receive another advance opportunity when the separate Visa Infinite Presale opens on August 29 at 10:00 a.m. Any remaining tickets will go on sale to the general public on August 31. Presale inventory will be limited, and none of these early-access windows guarantees admission to what could become one of the Festival’s hottest automotive tickets. Because Kang wrote, directed and stars in DRIFTER, he is widely expected to attend its World Premiere, although TIFF has not yet officially announced the guest list.
Toronto’s gearheads will not let this night pass quietly. The world premiere of a future car cinema classic deserves to have the theatre surrounded by a rolling tribute of JDM machinery, tuned exhausts and enough underglow to be visible from space—like that time F&F went to space!
It will not merely be a movie premiere. It could become Toronto car culture’s thunderous salute to Han.
