Labour Day was deep into September this year; Still the first Monday, but the second calendar week. It was weird because all the major racing series in the province wrap up by the end of August, and the big car shows are nearly done too. It’s not time to put the cars away for winter just yet. But with summer vacation over, car meets get smaller and fewer.

Luckily, Durham Meets hosted a day-before-school meet in Whitby last week.

It was interesting to see who attended the weekday car meet.

Plenty of high school and college kids were at the twilight meet. Those were the ones driving older model Subaru and Mitsubishi vehicles. There was more than one BRZ and plenty of pick-up trucks —the meet was in Durham region after all— and one black-on-black Infiniti G37 representing the speed demons.

Then there’s the older gearheads, those long out of school and well into their working years. Since Tuesday wasn’t the first day of school for them, they were expected. And you could spot them from a mile away rolling in a Lamborghini, an Aston Martin, or a late-model Corvette. High dollar cars.

Event organizers and ‘official’ car clubs really anchor these meets They bring out sick rides like fully-wrapped Dodge Challenger on air suspension, and maybe even a classic C4 Corvette convertible.

Despite the serious competition from the parking lot, you’d have to say that the pair of Subaru WRXs, twenty years apart in age, stole the show in matching World Rally Blue paint. Maybe we’re a little prejudiced, since these two vehicles are Daniel’s Bugeye WRX and Alice’s VBWRX direct from the Demaras Racing stable.

You can really see the family resemblance!

A great young photographer named Kenny Wang (IG: KTW12333) was at the car meet and took a bunch of pics of the Subarus. His shots have really strong composition, and he has a keen eye for detail. His pictures looked like something out of a car magazine!

A couple days later, Kenny used his graphic design skills to put together a glossy brochure type layout, just for a fun social media post. And to think, this is just a high-school kid doing all this. Bravo!

The car scene need more guys like Kenny and fewer hooligans.
