Getting to enjoy a track day at the Mosport DDT with my son Daniel and our old friend Max Preston was a great experience. It’s a tired cliché, but we were like kids in a candy store. Drivers could select from a Corvette or Porsche, while some guys even brought their own vehicles including a BMW with Red Bull livery and a ’71 Pontiac Le Mans.

Of course Daniel chose the Ferrari and based on Max Preston’s Scuderia Ferrari jacket, he approved of young Daniel’s choice. But as a 48-year-old father of two, I’m geared more for big cars. A full-size American sedan with enough space to bring the kids and enough power to roast the tires. For me, the choice was obvious; the Dodge Charger Police Interceptor!

Big, long, wide and heavy, this retired police car has a propane-powered 5.7 L HEMI that made 370 HP and 395 TQ. I couldn’t want to sneak up on Mustang GTs on the race track and flip on the siren… just like in real life!

My co-pilot Max Preston warned me that the tires and brakes on the police car were a little tired, since it had over 300,000 km on the clock. But he’d also mentioned several time that it was a favourite of the track workers when scurrying out on track to grab cones that customers had re-arranged. Comfy and floaty, this would be the perfect car!

And it still had the lights and sirens, so this was absolutely going to be a blast. A childhood dream come true… driving a cop car as fast as I dared!

For the past 10 years, I’ve spent every weekend from April to October with my son Daniel. There was no way he was going to miss this! And what father wouldn’t take the opportunity to put their son in the back of a police car!

The extra-special part of the experience was getting to share the moment with Max. He’s a great guy, always been super-supportive of Daniel, and he’s a good racer too. But I knew that I could scare the living daylights out of him in this car. I think I achieved my goal.
