Commercials. I hate them. Nothing worse. But this one is just a little different. It plays a lot like a 2 minute movie. It shows how cars can serve as a connection between people; in this instance, young Yosuke and his father. Years after becoming estranged from his family, Yosuke seeks reconciliation. But where does such a difficult conversation even begin?

There are versions of this commercial on YouTube with English subtitles. Don’t watch them. The message is so universal, you will 100% understand what’s being said.

Note: the toy car that Yosuke’s dad hands him is actually Subaru 360, a Japanese ‘Kei’ car from the 1960’s and not a VW Beetle.

    1. It doesn’t matter if you understand Japanese or not. A father and son yelling at each other (and one walking out the door) is just heart-wrenching.

That moment late in the commercial, when the son holds up the keys (I guess asking the dad if he wants to take a ride) and the dad walks away…that made me tear up. Seemed like there was no fixing things; it had been too long, too much hurt, to ever repair the relationship.

Hell no! All they needed was a car to connect them!

      1. I had a difficult relationship with my father and we occasionally yelled at each other, but for sure, cars always had been our way to go back to good terms. Thank God now, that I am older and a bit wiser, we are very good friends.
