Met an automotive aficionado at Markham Meets Monday; a car guy younger than the 1989 Toyota Supra he was driving who was inquisitive about the 1992 Subaru SVX we’d brought. Buddy suggested we enter the SVX in the retro 80s & 90s car show called OBLIVION coming up in August.

We’d heard about the event before, but the racing schedule always conflicted. But this time, no problem.

OBLIVION is a car show intended to celebrate a generation of retro cars; only vehicles build between 1980 and the turn of the century are allowed in the show. There’s also a heavy nostalgic element to OBLIVION with old school music, video games, movies and other cultural touchstones. The event bills itself as a field-trip back to those simpler times.

This year’s OBLOVION VI will feature an indoor car show for high-dollar rides, and a much bigger outdoor parking lot layout of over 250 selected rides.

Organizers are curating the selection of vehicles, to show a wide array of machinery, and Demaras Racing hopes to be selected. One stroke against the SVX is the show’s emphasis on originality. OEM or ‘stock’ cars are preferred, almost like time capsules of the era. With its AirLift air suspension and Delta Speed body kit, the ’92 SVX isn’t stock any longer. But it is still a mint condition example of a retro Japanese GT car from the period.

Era correct attire from the 80s and 90s is a must, so we’ll have to rummage through our closets or a vintage store before the event. If we’re going to do this, we’re going all out with our ghetto blaster, shutter shades and metallic teal and hot pink colour palate.

This year’s OBLIVION 80s & 90s Car & Culture Show takes place on Sunday August 11th 2024 inside the Country Heritage Park at 8560 Tremaine Rd in Milton (Ontario, Canada) from 12pm noon to 5pm. rain or shine.

  1. Hope you get selected! Sounds like a blast! If only we still had our original Previa. It would qualify for sure. Came off the line in 1993 the same day our daughter was born.
