Toowoomba, Australia’s favourite son Will Power is a racing icon. He’s an Indianapolis 500 winner, an IndyCar series champion, and the absolute record-holder for most pole positions in open-wheel history.

Maybe because this is the 44-year-old’s training regimen at home between visits to the gym. A full size IndyCar cockpit with hydraulic actuators to rotate the driver, and simulate the G-forces he’ll experience over 200 laps on the 2.5 mile oval at the ‘Greatest Spectacle in Racing‘ on May 25th.
Maybe it takes a lot of willpower to be willpower. Interesting simulator.
Imagine the pressure of that name. Forget about nicotine patches to kick the Camels.
.
Sounds like a circus performer or a stunt man or something.
I’ve been to Toowoomba! Will was a toddler I think when I was there. Cool simulator!!
What’s the odds you would have been to such a small town in Queensland. Not even 200K people there, so not exactly a big tourist town.
And that machine looks more like a torture implement than a training device. Turn the sound on that 5 second video… the groans of discomfort sound painful.
Until I started following your blog, I really didn’t know how physically demanding racing is!
It’s interesting isn’t it? Driving is something most of us do on a daily basis. Se we logically assume that driving a race car is similar. But it’s so physically taxing that you really have to agree these are professional athletes, not just ‘drivers’ like the rest of us.
I want one of those simulators…
Imagine how realistic the G-forces must be. Every turn on the track, the device rotates, and the weight on the helmet makes it feel like your head’s going to snap off. I noticed he’s even wearing a helmet, which must restrict his breathing during this ‘exercise’.
.
I, on the other hand, do NOT want one of these. I’ll stick with Pole Position on my Atari.
