First teased a month ago at a Super Taikyu race event, Subaru has now officially unveiled the BRZ Spec.Z Rally challenger ahead of its competition debut—marking a surprising but welcome return to the brand’s rally roots.
Subaru has been stringing enthusiasts along lately. Fans have been hoping for the return of icons like the STi, only to get a steady stream of special editions instead. This time, though, the tease has actually led to something interesting. While it’s not a road car, it’s still a strong signal that Subaru hasn’t forgotten how to build something exciting.

Rather than using the expected WRX platform, Subaru took the BRZ coupe and transformed it into a full-fledged rally machine. The result is the Spec.Z—an unconventional choice, but one that leans into the BRZ’s strengths.
To make it rally-ready, Subaru added a proper AWD system for loose-surface grip, along with a turbocharger for the 2.4-liter boxer engine. Power is delivered through a six-speed sequential transmission, and the car rides on a strut-type suspension setup front and rear.

Factory driver Toshihiro Arai praised the car’s responsiveness, braking, and especially its cornering ability. He noted that the BRZ’s compact size and low center of gravity play a big role in its performance.
It’s not a production car—for now. But if the Spec.Z proves itself in competition, don’t be surprised if Subaru turns this rally experiment into something fans can actually buy.
