Since 1967 there’s been a late-knight spot in the east end for traditional burgers and fries. When Johnny’s Hamburgers at Victoria Park south of Sheppard opened, Scarborough looked very different. Back then, the only neighbour was the Northeast Drive-In movie theatre and some farmers.

Urban growth has encroached on Johnny’s. Developers built a big office/retail space next to the historic burger joint, trying to squeeze them out of 2555 Victoria Park Ave. Johnny’s stood firm, and remains an anomaly in the area. A single story building with no interior seating but a big parking lot.

Yup, just like the good old days, at Johnny’s Hamburgers you eat in your car, like a an old fashioned drive-in restaurant. The only thing missing that would make the retro experience complete are carhops on roller skates..
