In the Northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna you’ll find Maranello, home of Ferrari, and the Imola Circuit, home to many a Grand Prix. So, when local police got a call shortly after 1:00 am with reports of dangerous driving in the local town of Bondeno, they assumed they’d caught an Italian speed demon.

Instead, they pulled over a 103-year-old woman driving an uninsured car at night with an expired driving license.

Giuseppina Molinari was driving to the town of Bondeno to meet friends. She got a little lost and allegedly drove along the same streets over and over, at high speeds. That’s when the cops caught up with her.

Born in 1920, Giuseppina has had a license for years. But according to Italian law, all drivers over the age of 80 must have a medical exam every two years to confirm they are still fit to drive. Seems Giuseppina skipped her appointment two years ago, and has had a suspended license ever since. Officers towed her car away, but also gave grandma a lift home.

It is believed this this incident makes Giuseppina Molinari the oldest traffic violator in Italian history. Refusing to be deprived of mobility, Molinari commented “I will buy myself a Vespa,” to local newspaper La Nuova Ferrara.

  1. Is this a true story or the amazing creation of a very creative person? Either way, it should probably be used in writing and storytelling classes as it probably has all the most cogent aspects of a play or story.

  2. The GIF at the top is not real. Its a VW commercial. But the pictures of the grandma in the article, and her red Fiat, are actually Giuseppina Molinari… the Italian speed demon.
