Racing stripes, a hood scoop, turbocharger and twin exhaust pipes. Is this the radical ride of some teenaged hooligan? No; this belongs to Alice, the mom of the Demaras Racing family. She’s has flown under the radar despite her racy Continental tire decals.

The long arm of the law finally reached out and grabbed this she-devil. Travelling at the breakneck speed of 41 km/h in a 30 km/h zone, Alice was hit with a $55 speeding fee, $8.25 lookup fee, and $15 Victim Justice fee.

After all the nasty words published on demaras.com about ‘speed cameras‘ it’s quite ironic that a car from the Demaras stable would be the slapped with a ticket after the cameras had already been scrapped. It’s like the City of Toronto was just waiting, biding its time.

The ticket has been framed and hung at Demaras Racing’s headquarters.

To those critical of the Ontario Premier’s decision to remove speed cameras, claiming it puts public safety at risk, think about this. While coming home from work, Demaras was going 1 km/h over the speed limit, when she entered a ‘trap’ where the limit dropped from 40 to 30. To nobody’s surprise, a camera was there to catch her transgression. Seems like a scam and a cash grab, doesn’t it?

  1. Sure does (and IS) …… I got one of these about 18 years ago, for running a “red light camera”. We had been at the Cleveland Clinic after my heart transplant and I was perpetually lost in that area. Added to that, were multiple road closures for repairs, and we ended up hopelessly lost in a “seedy” part of town. I rolled through this traffic light at the breakneck speed of 8 MPH. The ticket showed my arm out the window pointing “should we go this way?”

I stewed about this for a few days, and even though I was technically guilty I had to express my anger. Since they sent me a picture of my infraction, I scanned 5 – $20 bills and sent that along with this statement. You send a picture of an infraction, I’m sending you a picture in return of the fine. (Then I taped an actual check to the back and sent it off to Cleveland.)

Years later the state of Ohio passed laws that these cameras could only be used if there was an actual human police officer taking the picture. There are a few around, but very rare these days. It was never about safety, it was always about money!

    1. Im totally impressed with your commitment! They send you a phony ticket, you send them phony money. Bravo!

But I totally understand your frustration. The slightest transgression gets slapped with a fine, without considering the human factor when driving.

Im not certain if we’re loving in the Matrix yet, but certainly reminds me of that old Stallone movie Demolition Man where wall mounted devices would issue tickets for swearing.

  2. I think I finally figured out who’s been vandalized and destroying all those speed cameras in your area.

Don’t worry. Tell Alice her secret is safe with me…

    1. Ha! The irony. I write about those devices, cheer when they’re vandalized… and it’s sweet, innocent Alice who’s actually the criminal mastermind.

And to get nabbed ‘after’ the cameras get shut down… adds insult to injury.

  3. Strategically placed speed traps suck. The city is getting its revenge. Good work framing the assault on a driver’s rights.
